WHY KOSELIG?

Koselig (pronounced koosh-lee) is a Norwegian term that is similar to the Danish term hygge for "cozy" with some distinct differences. While hygge evokes a warm fire, snuggling under a blanket, and reading a book, koselig encompasses those things while emphasizing a connectedness with nature and other people. Although a large part of my family tree traces back to Norway, my cultural genealogy can also be described as "Heinz 57" (as my father would say it) or "scandihoovian" (as my maternal grandfather would say it.) Still, as a native of Minnesota, I have long-struggled with making peace with the long dark months of winter. Getting through it, for me, involves bundling up and enjoying the sights and sounds of the winter landscape, sharing warm food and conversation with close family and friends, and spending peaceful moments reading or creating with my hands. Koselig is what I strive for personally, whether in the winter months or simply during personal times of emotional darkness.

ABOUT THE POTTER

Lisle Soukup Thielbar is a native of Minnesota, who spent many of her adult years living in Arizona and Illinois before returning to Minnesota. She studied creative writing in undergraduate school and political management in grad school. She has worked at Arizona botanical gardens and arboreta, arts advocacy organizations, and a medical association, and her responsibilities have included public relations, events planning, writing newsletters and press releases, and advocating for legislative and regulatory policy. She also volunteered in animal rescue for several years. For the past eight years, her main concentration has been as the caregiver for her two young children and two dogs, while doing pottery in every spare moment. She makes what pleases her, and is always excited to explore and learn more.
